For over 10 years, Flying Fox has been working with schools to shift how young people see disability and inclusion.

Through this work we have developed a deep understanding of how to build the attitudes, skills and communities needed to create a truly inclusive world.

School is where inclusion begins. When young people learn to embrace difference early, it shapes not just their school community but the world they go on to create.

Our approach is grounded in evidence. The need is real: students with disability are often more isolated than their peers at school (Biggs & Carter, 2016). Research shows that combining education about disability with meaningful contact between students produces the most lasting change in attitudes (Rademaker et al., 2020).

Every Flying Fox program is built on exactly that. Repeated, authentic engagement between young people with and without disability. That is what creates lasting change.

“We learned about different ways people communicate, like using Auslan or technology, and how important it is to think about inclusion. Flying Fox made me more aware of how everyone learns and expresses themselves differently. The lessons helped me see that accessibility is something we should all care about in our lives.”

“In class, we discussed the importance of celebrating differences, but camp gave me the chance to live this lesson. While there were tough moments, the joy of seeing participants laugh, smile, or try something new was unforgettable. The classroom gave me the knowledge, but camp gave me the real-life moments that made it meaningful.”

Together, Maya and Savanna lead our education department, ensuring quality across programs, overseeing the school and student experience, while also managing our team of education program facilitators, who are dedicated to engaging and inspiring every student.

For students who go on to become Flying Fox volunteers, this Buddy team (Lori, Jack & Gabi) will be your main point of connection. They are committed to ensuring your volunteering journey is as meaningful and impactful as possible.
